26 Oct 2011- Food Shopping, and the best fried chicken wings ever!

I went food shopping with Winston the other day, at a place where the vegetables and fruits were cheap! More like Walthamstow market prices, rather then inflated supermarket prices! We ended up having a discussion about why food prices are so different depending on where you buy them, and Winston the food scientist starting talking about how E.coli can infiltrate the food system, and that the extra money you pay for produce in the supermarket is due to the cleaning process used on that produce. Apparently, they’re cleaned better then produce in the market, and what’s you’re paying for is the pre-rinse and sanitized growing process. I protested because I said that as long as produce is rinsed properly with water, and cooked thoroughly (or in the case of fruit, peeled or rubbed clean properly), it should be fine and that flora or fauna in the stomach exists to ensure a strong immune system. If everything eaten was absolutely clean all the time, then I reckon the immune system would be weak, and I also stated that if a person had a limited income, how would they be able to feed kids properly if inflated prices for food were paid all the time? What do you reckon? Anyhow, Winston and I changed the subject, but I bought it up with Auntie and she kind of agreed with me and with Winston so she was neutral.

We visited Auntie Nora and her family yesterday, and Merton and Sonny also came for dinner. There was so much food! It was Chinese takeaway since Auntie didn’t cook, but OH MY GOODNESS the fried chicken is amazing! It was salt and pepper chicken wings, but the batter was very crispy and golden, and had a wonderful crunch. I had four pieces of it, and they weren’t exactly small like British chicken wings. Along with the chicken, we had special chow mien, chicken chop suey, stir fried beef in savoury sauce, hot and sour soup with deep fried won tons, and special fried rice. I ate a lot, and I even had space for one piece of yellow bean hopia. We all had a good conversation, and I gave each of the following to Auntie, Merton and Sonny: 1 bag of haribo super sour sweets, and 1 bag of Jellyatrics jelly sweets (the elderly version of Jelly babies, hehe!).

I cooked lentils yesterday as Winston had never eaten or used them before. I’d bought them at that cheap food place, but it took me many rinses before the lentils were clean. There are advantages to eating pre-packaged lentils- less water to rinse them! I made a tumeric, tomato and chicken type lentil stew in the slow cooker. It was in there cooking for 6 hours, and it tasted okay. Winston said it was delicious, but I think he would say that for every meal I cooked! He did say I’d been cooking curry like food for the past few days, and that it meant it’s probably his time to cook the main meal now. So I think that we’re having tinola or sinagang sometime soon.

I’m just glad that we’ve found a cheap place to shop! You know what a bargain-hunter I am!

By the way, I saw this program called Lost Girl. It has Zooey Deshanel in it as the main quirky star. The program is pretty funny, but if it were real life, you’d think she had quirks that meant she is socially inept. If you are able to watch an episode, let me know what you think?

P.S Sharon fruit is called FUYU fruit here. Courgettes are called ZUCCHINI. Coriander is called CILANTRO. Aubergines are called EGGPLANTS. Nashi pears are called ASIAN PEARS.
